So many important films came out during that time and it’s great to see a film like Tromeo and Juliet be included in that group.

Most importantly, this film was (feel free to disagree) the last great hurrah for the independent film movement that took place during the 90’s. The supporting cast ins’t anything to scoff at either including Sean Gunn (Brother of writer James Gunn) and scream queen Debbie Rochon, there’s also Stephen Blackeheart, who I feel had the strongest presence on screen Blackeheart stole every scene he was in. Romeo and Juliet is a story that has been told countless times and through different mediums but Gunn took a story which had become pretty unoriginal and made it one of the most unforgettable adaptations complete with nipple piercings, lesbians and graphic violence.Īlthough some people might see this as just another Troma film and instantly write it off, it’s a surprisingly emotional film that works really well because of the incredible cast including Will Keenan (Tromeo) and Jane Jensen (Juliet). He manages to take some disgusting characters and makes you feel empathy for them. I shouldn’t leave out James Gunn when writing a review of Tromeo and Juliet this film features some of Gunn’s strongest writing (aside from Super). Tromeo was released in 1996 to generally favorable, if not tolerant, reviews. He took a step back from the screwball comedies that put him on the map and took a step towards more ambitious films that carried a more personal message. Lloyd Kaufman really took a big step forward with his approach to film making with this film. Shakespeare left out of the original story including: graphic sex/nudity, gratuitous acts of violence, angry cock monsters and some of the greatest potty humor ever written. I think we all know the story of Romeo and Juliet which is essentially the same story as Tromeo and Juliet except Tromeo and Juliet has all of the cool shit that Mr. Tromeo and Juliet was written by James Gunn ( Slither, Super) and directed by Lloyd Kaufman. For all of you high school students out there that are studying good ol’ William Shakespeare in school, what’s a better way to learn the classical stories of Billy Shakespeare than from the master of the B-movie himself Lloyd Kaufman?
